Founded in 1905, Ikwani Safaa Musical Club can probably trace its roots back further than any other orchestra in Africa. Every known musician from Zanzibar has at some point or other performed or played with “Malindi” (as they are also affectionately known) and recently they have been enjoying a strong revival in popularity with the local population. This is taarab in its original beauty – delicate poetry, outstanding vocal performances, which reveal in their elaborate ornamentation the close connection to their Arabic roots, and finely chiselled instrumentals. Love, companionship, friendship, the enjoyment of music, the pains of sadness, all find expression in the moving performances and the sweet sounds of their orchestral arrangements. For the 2010 Festival, Mohammed Issa Matona, one of the orchestra's leading musicians, presents a special project with selected members of Ikwani Safaa and special guest Tamalyn Dallal. Matona is one of Zanzibar's most celebrated musicians, who started playing professionally in 1989 with Mohamed Ilyas and Twinkling Stars, as percussionist, violinist and qanun player. Since then his musical career and global travels have continued with Ikwani Safaa, G-Clef Band, and teaching music at Zanzibar's Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA). Tamalyn Dallal from USA, is a dancer that has performed in 38 countries, and taught some of the world's top Middle Eastern dancers. Together with Mohammed Issa Matona, she produced Made in Zanzibar, an experimental project bridging three cultures. It started when Tamalyn Dallal gave Matona a CD of several classical songs and asked him to create music she could dance to. He blended Zanzibari taarab songs with virtuoso Arabic-style instrumental solos of oud, violin, and qanun.
