Breaking News: Didier Awadi & Phat 4 (Senegal) Confirmed

We are pleased to announce that internationally acclaimed, African hiphop pioneer and founding member of the legendary Senegalese rap group Positive Black Soul, Didier Awadi has confirmed his appearance at the festival.

Didier Awadi & Phat 4

Senegal

Without a shadow of a doubt, Didier Awadi is the most prominent artist to have emerged from Africa's Francophone Rap scene. Awadi, who won RFI's "Musiques du Monde" award in 2004, has established himself as a veritable pioneer, pushing back borders and opening new paths for a sound that has, in recent years, been adopted as the music of an entire generation of African youth and their counterparts across the world….  Read more.

Bi Kidude – Silent Drum

Bi Kidude by Peter Bennett

(photo: Peter Bennett)

Within weeks of returning from her eight concert tour of Europe last month, Zanzibari mama msondo, Bi Kidude was rushed to Al Rahma hospital for an emergency hernia operation. Thankfully, within days she was up and about again and seemingly her usual cheery self. "I shall cook for myself", she said, "I don't need anyone taking care of me", said the 95 year old.

However, she is now under doctors' orders to stay off the drum for the next six months, which she admits she will find hard, "but at least I shall still be able to sing!"

Thanks to everyone who responded to the competition in our previous newsletter. The question was:

The name of the festival, "Sauti za Busara" roughly translates into English as "Sounds of Wisdom", but from which language?

The correct answer is of course "Kiswahili" and the five lucky winners of Sauti za Busara t-shirts are:

  • Steven Kivutia (Nairobi, Kenya)
  • Rolf Lattmann (Mombasa, Kenya)
  • Ameir Mohammed (Oslo, Norway)
  • Ashraf Ibrahim (Cairo, Egypt)
  • Alfred Wasike (Kampala, Uganda)

Congratulations!
